Date:

Byron Bay Bluesfest announced that in addition to the 34th annual Byron Bay Festival being held on 6–10 April 2023, the inaugural Bluesfest Melbourne is set to take place on 8–9 April 2023.

Byron Bay Bluesfest, formerly known as the East Coast International Blues & Roots Music Festival, has been held annually in the Byron Bay area since 1990. The festival attracts visitors from around the world, including celebrities like Matt Damon, Jason Momoa, and Chris Hemsworth. The festival features a diverse selection of blues and roots performers from Australia and across the globe, making it one of the world’s leading contemporary music festivals.

Recognition and Expansion

Since its inception, the festival has grown tremendously, starting with 6,000 visitors and now attracting over 100,000 music lovers. Bluesfest moved to its permanent home in 2010, the community event site at the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, just 11 km north of Byron Bay. With over 200 performances across multiple stages and five 12-hour days, camping for 6,000 guests, quality family entertainment – there is always something for everyone.

Bluesfest has garnered international recognition and was nominated at the Pollstar Awards (USA) for International Music Festival of the Decade, making it one of the top 10 festivals in the world in the last decade according to Pollstar.

Controversy over Line-up

Despite the festival’s success, it was not without controversy. When the line-up for the Byron Bay Bluesfest 2023 was announced, it included the controversial band Sticky Fingers, which sparked outrage from some festival-goers. Melbourne band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and rapper Sampa the Great withdrew from the festival in protest. Bluesfest director, Peter Noble, defended the decision to include Sticky Fingers, stating that the band’s lead singer had apologized for his past actions and that it was time for artists to move on from past mistakes.

However, after weeks of backlash, it was announced that Sticky Fingers would no longer be part of the line-up. Despite the controversy, the festival continues to be a celebrated event that brings music lovers together from all walks of life. Byron Bay Bluesfest is undoubtedly Australia’s leading contemporary Blues & Roots music festival, and its impact is felt both nationally and internationally.
