British and Ukrainians sing Ukrainian songs at the Royal Opera House in London

Date:

Ukrainians in the UK and the Royal Opera House Choir have collaborated on a joint concert to support the Ukrainian community living in the UK. The project, called Songs for Ukraine, brought together over 130 Ukrainians to perform Ukrainian music at the Royal Opera House in London. The concert was a great success, and the project received positive coverage in the global media.

More than 360 applications were received from Ukrainians living in the UK to participate in the project, but only 130 choristers were selected. The newly formed choir was led by professional conductors William Spalding and Bohdan Parashchak, and the project included two months of joint work and masterclasses.

The Power of Art to Unite People

The Songs for Ukraine project was an opportunity to demonstrate the resilience of the Ukrainian community in the face of challenges and to showcase the power of art to unite people. The project brought together Ukrainians who had lived in the UK for a long time, those who left at the beginning of the war, and those who had lived under occupation for several months. Not all of the participants were professional musicians, but music has always been a passion and a part of their lives.
The concert was the culmination of the project, and the newly formed choir performed a range of Ukrainian works, including The Anthem of Ukraine, Prayer for Ukraine, Black Arable Land Isolated, Chom, Chom, My Land, Live, Ukraine, Live for Beauty, and others. The project also enriched the musical repertoire of the Royal Opera House.

Bringing Communities Together

The project was a joint effort between the Royal Opera House and the Ukrainian community in London. The Cathedral Choir of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of the Holy Family, the largest Ukrainian church in London, and Ukrainians in London, an organization that supports Ukrainians in the UK capital, also supported the project. Gillian Barker, Director of Education at the Royal Opera House, expressed her honor to cooperate with members of the Ukrainian community in London during such a difficult time.
The Songs for Ukraine project was an inspiring example of how the arts can bring communities together, particularly during challenging times. The project demonstrated the resilience of the Ukrainian community and the power of art to unite people.
