Brazil’s Processed Food Exports Hit by New US Tariffs

Date:

Brazil’s processed food exports experienced a significant downturn in August, with a reported drop of $300 million, a 4.8 percent decline from July. The Brazilian Food Industry Association (ABIA) attributed this slump directly to the new 50 percent tariffs imposed by the United States. Sales to the US alone plummeted by 27.7 percent compared to the previous month and nearly 20 percent year-over-year, reflecting the immediate impact of the new surcharge that took effect in early August. Affected products included sugars, which saw a 69.5 percent drop, animal proteins with a 45.8 percent decline, and food preparations, down by 37.5 percent.

The export performance in August followed an unusual surge in July, as Brazilian companies rushed to ship goods to the US before the new tariffs came into force. This anticipatory action led to a temporary spike in sales, making the subsequent drop in August even more pronounced. João Dornellas, ABIA’s executive president, emphasized that the data underscores the country’s urgent need to diversify its trading partners and strengthen its negotiating capacity to mitigate the effects of such protectionist measures.

While the US market contracted, there was a notable shift in trade flows. Mexico emerged as a key alternative, with its imports of Brazilian processed foods increasing by 43 percent in August. This surge made Mexico the fastest-growing market for Brazilian exporters during the period, providing a partial offset to the losses in the US. However, ABIA projects that the full impact of the tariffs will be felt in the coming months, with an estimated 80 percent drop in affected exports to the US from August to December, leading to a cumulative loss of over $1.35 billion.
