The Brazil Supreme Court sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, to four years and two months in prison for attempting to pressure Brazilian authorities by seeking US sanctions against his own country during his father’s coup trial.
The ruling marks a dramatic escalation in the legal troubles facing the Bolsonaro family, which has remained at the center of Brazilian politics since Jair Bolsonaro was convicted and sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup following the 2022 election.
A panel of four Supreme Court judges sided with prosecutors, who accused Eduardo Bolsonaro of threatening Brazilian institutions by publicly suggesting he would secure punitive measures from Washington if court proceedings against his father did not end favorably.
Why Was Eduardo Bolsonaro Convicted?
According to prosecutors, Eduardo Bolsonaro’s actions amounted to an attempt to intimidate judicial authorities and officials from other branches of government. The court found that his efforts to encourage US sanctions against Brazil while legal proceedings involving his father were underway crossed the line from political advocacy into unlawful pressure on state institutions.
“It is not the role of a Brazilian federal deputy to lobby abroad against their own country,” Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said while delivering the ruling.

The case stems from Eduardo Bolsonaro’s efforts to win support from US President Donald Trump as his father faced prosecution over allegations that he attempted to overturn the results of Brazil’s 2022 presidential election. According to prosecutors, Eduardo sought to persuade Washington to take punitive measures against Brazil if the proceedings against Jair Bolsonaro did not end favorably. Those efforts initially appeared to have some impact. Last year, Trump imposed steep tariffs on Brazilian imports, describing the legal cases against Jair Bolsonaro as a “witch hunt.”
What Happened To Those US Measures?
The tariffs were later lifted following a meeting between Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The Trump administration had also imposed sanctions on Justice Moraes, one of the leading figures overseeing cases involving Bolsonaro allies. Those sanctions were eventually withdrawn as diplomatic relations between Washington and Brasilia improved.
