Botswana officially ends COVID-19 public health emergency

Date:

According to Christopher Nyanga, a spokesman for Botswana’s Ministry of Health, COVID-19 is no longer regarded as a public health emergency in Botswana.

“Botswana had actually de-escalated COVID-19 response activities over the past six months and has reduced measures and protocols put in place to mitigate the spread of the disease,” said Nyanga.

According to Nyanga, the ongoing risk assessments conducted to determine the degree of the de-escalation served as the guidance for this progressive deactivation of COVID-19 actions.

The finding implies that COVID-19 no longer calls for a coordinated international response, according to Mpho Pheto, an independent physician located in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.

According to Pheto, this occurs against a background of diminishing COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations, and fatalities in Botswana and elsewhere.

On May 5, 2023, the World Health Organisation decided that COVID-19 will no longer be considered as a public health emergency of worldwide concern, but rather as an established and ongoing health issue.
