BAFTA Film Awards 2023: Winners, Red Carpet & Highlights

Date:

The 76th annual BAFTA Film Awards ceremony was held in London, hosted by the British Academy of Television and Film Arts. The nominees included both domestic and foreign films shown in British cinemas in 2022. Traditionally, the nominees were announced a month prior to the main event.

New Venue and Presenter

The ceremony was held for the first time in the 2,700-seat Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Center, the largest arts venue in Europe. Richard E. Grant, a 2019 Oscar nominee, hosted the event. He arrived in a Batmobile, wearing a white floor-length cape. Alison Hammond, a British TV star, helped him entertain the audience from the backstage studio. Radio host Vic Hope and film critic Ali Plumb gave a preview of the red carpet.

Awards and Attendees

The event began with a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96. Krishnendu Majumdar, the chairman of the British Film Academy, and Helen Mirren, an Oscar-winning actress who played Elizabeth in the 2006 film The Queen, delivered tributes. The ceremony included music, such as a performance by Ariana DeBose, who won an Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for her role in West Side Story.

Sky News reported that the ceremony was one of the most attended in the history of the film awards. Famous stars, such as Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Brendan Fraser, Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Thompson, Sam Mendes, Viola Davis, Anya Taylor-Joy, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jodie Turner-Smith, Julianne Moore, Lily James, Martin Freeman, Rami Malek, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sophie Turner, and Vera Wong, graced the red carpet with elegant outfits.

Award Winners

The 76th BAFTA Awards ceremony awarded winners in 25 categories. All Quiet on the Western Front, a film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s cult anti-war novel, won seven out of 14 nominations, making it the most awarded non-English language film in BAFTA’s history. The Elvis Presley biopic Elvis and the British tragicomedy Banshee Inisherina each received four awards. David Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar: The Waterway won only one award for Best Visual Effects, despite being one of the highest-grossing films in cinema history.

In conclusion, the 76th BAFTA Awards ceremony was a star-studded event that honored the best in cinema from 2022. The change of venue to the Royal Festival Hall and Richard E. Grant’s performance as the host made the event even more special. The awards show recognized a wide range of films, from the highest-grossing blockbuster to the most critically acclaimed non-English language film.
