Afristar, the operator of Kenya’s Chinese-built Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), stated Tuesday that it will increase the number of cars on the SGR passenger service to meet rising demand.
The carriages, which will accommodate both economy and first-class passengers, will be added to the trains that run between Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa from April 19 to May 9, according to Afristar.
Since its inception in 2017, the passenger train service has seen an increase in demand. During the recent Easter weekend, for example, the trains were completely filled as Kenyans sought ease, speed, and affordability.
“We are happy to announce that we will be adding more coaches from April 19-May 9 to accommodate the increased number of passengers using the Nairobi-Mombasa SGR trains during the closing and opening of schools,” said SGR
According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, passenger traffic increased by 20.1 per cent in 2022, with trains transporting 2.39 million people, up from 1.99 million in 2021.
