Houston’s Menil Collection is showcasing an exhibition dedicated to the art of Cameroon’s Grassfields region and its global diaspora. The exhibition, curated by Paul R. Davis, presents more than 20 historical works from the Menil Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and local private collections. Additionally, the exhibition features two contemporary artworks by Douala-based artist HervĂ© Youmbi that engage with the region’s rich artistic heritage, colonial legacies, and the international dissemination of historical African art.
Cameroon’s Rich Cultural Heritage
The Grassfields region, situated in the west and northwest of Cameroon and bordering southeastern Nigeria, is home to some 200 independent monarchies, each governed by a paramount ruler and a council of nobles. These monarchies are distinguished by their origin stories, languages, and cultural practices. Many of them date back to the 17th century, while others developed more recently due to political power shifts caused by European colonial occupation. Today, these kingdoms continue to shape their identities through artistic patronage for royal courts and international markets.
Artistic Treasures on Display
The exhibition’s historical works include headdresses, masks, hats, royal stools, sculptures, and palace architectural elements from several of the Grassfields kingdoms. Musical instruments are also on display because they had a special meaning – alerting people to the approach of the king and helping the living to communicate with their ancestors. These artifacts showcase the artistic traditions of the region, which have been passed down through generations. They also highlight the region’s vibrant cultural heritage, as well as its ongoing transformation at the hands of contemporary artists like Youmbi.
Youmbi’s contemporary artworks provide a counterpoint to the display of historical works.
Youmbi and Davis traveled to the Grassfields in 2022 to negotiate the loan of three “Celestial Thrones” currently on view at the Menil. Art of the Cameroon Grassfields, A Living Heritage in Houston” is a testament to the power of art in preserving cultural heritage.
