Maersk resumes direct bookings to Ukraine

Date:

Maersk, one of the world’s leading container carriers, has launched a new weekly barge service from Romania to Ukraine. The service will run on two routes, through Constanta/Danube Canal and the Black Sea, with a transit time of approximately 1.5 days. The move comes as the company seeks to alleviate the challenges faced by logistics operations in and out of Ukraine.

Direct Bookings to Ukraine

Maersk is now able to offer direct bookings to Ukraine from around the world, which marks a significant development. The Viking Alliance container terminal has been operating in the port of Reni since December after opening in December 2022. The terminal receives at least 150 containers for import and 400 containers for export once a week, with the figures sometimes exceeding 200 and 550, respectively. Containers are transported to the Romanian port of Constanta by feeder vessels and barges. A similar service should start in March between Constanta and Izmail.

Capacity and Documentation

Bookings will be subject to capacity and proper documentation, which includes the legal adoption of the Ukraine clause due to the constant risk in the region. This move will enhance the security of the cargoes being transported. Maersk stopped making calls to Ukraine in February last year, but the company is now pleased to be able to offer direct bookings to customers. The implementation of solutions for customers’ cargoes is a key priority for the company, and it remains committed to maintaining the security of all operations.
