India: Dense fog, Himalayan snow, cold mountain winds to grip North

Date:

A fresh western disturbance has reached the western Himalayan region, set to influence the weather on February 6. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system will trigger isolated rainfall or snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh.

Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak and weather vlogger for Kisan Tak, noted that “there will be a possibility of rain or snowfall in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh due to this activity.”

HOW THICK WILL THE FOG BE IN THE PLAINS?

While the mountains see snow, the plains will struggle with visibility. The IMD has issued warnings for dense fog during morning and night hours in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar until February 6.

Devendra Tripathi explained that “there may be a little fog in some regions, especially in Punjab and in the foothills of Uttar Pradesh,” specifically mentioning districts like Kushinagar and Gorakhpur.

IS THERE A CHANCE OF RAIN IN THE CITIES?

Dry weather is expected to prevail across most of the country outside the northern hills.

Although some clouds might appear over the plains, Devendra Tripathi clarified that “there is no possibility of rain in the plains from Punjab to south India.”

Meanwhile, Nasa satellite imagery often tracks these cloud movements, showing the reach of the subtropical westerly jet stream currently prevailing over east India.

WHAT WILL THE TEMPERATURES BE TOMORROW?

Minimum temperatures in the plains are currently hovering between five and 10 degrees Celsius in areas like Delhi and Punjab.

Devendra Tripathi highlighted a crucial factor: “the cold wind that is coming from the mountains will continue to reach from Punjab to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.”

He warned that this wind would sweep from Punjab to West Bengal and Maharashtra, ensuring that while days remain sunny, there would be “a throat cold at night and in the morning.”

The IMD forecasts no significant change in these minimum temperatures over northwest India for the next 48 hours.
