Trends in patent applications submitted to the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (FIPS) in Russia for 2025 show that digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have emerged as the undoubted leader, dominating new filings across all sectors. This surge in innovation is driven by the country’s strategic emphasis on achieving technological sovereignty and overcoming barriers imposed by Western sanctions. The largest number of patents is observed in areas related to AI and machine learning, big-data algorithms, neural networks for pattern recognition, and natural language processing.
The patent activity is split between fundamental developments and applied solutions across various real-economy sectors, including finance, medicine, and industrial production. A significant volume of patents relates to the development of management systems for smart cities, smart homes, and industrial enterprises, as well as technical solutions in the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity. These inventions focus on new methods for protecting information, preventing cyberattacks, and cryptographic solutions, reflecting the high stakes of digitalization. The strong trend in filings signals a successful push in innovation education and capacity building across Russia’s technology ecosystem. Major state-owned and private entities, including leaders like Sberbank and Yandex, are actively protecting their proprietary algorithms and solutions. This focus on patent protection is crucial for ensuring the long-term viability of domestic software and hardware under the government’s import substitution strategy.
