South Africa Citrus Exports Hit Record High in 2025, Up 22% Year-on-Year

Date:

South Africa’s citrus export sector achieved a record performance in 2025, with export volumes rising by approximately 22% year-on-year. This strong growth underscores the continued competitiveness and resilience of South Africa’s agricultural export market despite significant domestic hurdles like logistical challenges at ports. The country has solidified its position as the world’s second-largest exporter of fresh citrus after Spain.

The record figures were primarily driven by strong gains across key citrus categories. Mandarins saw the most significant surge in volume, followed closely by oranges and lemons. This high export volume was facilitated by favorable weather conditions earlier in the season, which led to a robust harvest, and the successful navigation of complex global logistics.

The success of the citrus sector provides a vital source of foreign exchange revenue and supports extensive employment across rural areas of the country. This strong performance signals confidence in the South African cold chain and agricultural supply systems, despite challenges posed by stricter European Union phytosanitary regulations and ongoing port efficiency issues at state-owned Transnet.
