Baidu Unveils M100 and M300 AI Chips as China Pushes for Tech Self-Sufficiency

Date:

Baidu, China’s leading search engine and AI giant, recently unveiled two new proprietary Artificial Intelligence (AI) chips, the Kunlun M100 and M300, underscoring the nation’s intensifying drive for technological self-sufficiency. The M300 is designed as a high-performance inference chip aimed at powering large language models (LLMs) and advanced AI applications, directly challenging offerings from foreign competitors. This indigenous chip development is a critical step in securing a domestic supply chain for high-end computing components.

The launch is a direct response to rising tech tensions and persistent US export controls, which have severely restricted China’s access to the most advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) necessary for training and deploying sophisticated AI models. By developing its own chip architecture, Baidu aims to reduce dependency on foreign technology and ensure the continuity of its AI innovation, which is central to China’s economic future. The Kunlun chip family is part of a broader national commitment, as outlined in the 15th Five-Year Plan, to achieve breakthroughs in integrated circuits and AI. The success of Baidu’s efforts signals the growing domestic capability in advanced chipmaking and reinforces the strong China story of shifting from dependency to building a robust, indigenous technology base.
