Ministry of Health Launches Electronic Medical Information Systems in 130 Health Institutions

Date:

Addis Ababa, September 23, 2025 (ENA) — The Ministry of Health has announced the implementation of electronic medical information systems in 130 health institutions across the country, marking a major milestone in modernizing Ethiopia’s healthcare sector.

The Lead Executive of the Digital Health Service, Gemechis Melkamu, stated that this is a key step toward building an integrated digital health ecosystem. He emphasized that digitalization is crucial for organizing and managing medical data from various regions, thereby improving its accessibility and reliability.

This initiative is part of the Ministry’s ten-year national digital health strategy. According to Gemechis, institutions already using these systems are seeing notable improvements in service delivery, data quality, and a reduction in patient morbidity. Both patients and healthcare professionals at pilot institutions, including St. Peter Specialized Hospital and Eka Kotebe General Hospital, have reported positive feedback.

Engineer Fanuel Habtamu, Executive Director of ICT at St. Peter, revealed that the hospital has been using digital health services for a year, with 74 percent of its services now digital. Zahreddin Shifa, Director of Information Technology at Eka Kotebe, confirmed the systems have streamlined hospital operations.

Medical professionals like Dr. Bruktawit Kidane and Dr. Thessalonke Kastu have noted improved efficiency and shortened waiting times. Patients such as Teka Wedajo and Frew Tenaw have also expressed that the services have reduced hassle and time wastage. The launch is already demonstrating meaningful progress in enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and responsiveness of Ethiopia’s healthcare services.
