The sum of the parts: artificial intelligence (AI) and the blockchain

Date:

It always happens this way: you find yourself scrolling through the continuous stream of content on your smartphone—that raging river of news, professional updates on LinkedIn, and everyday life stories—and you stumble upon one that makes you say: “Are we really at this point already?

I’m referring to the growing evidence from companies contributing to the development of what has been called the “magic alliance” between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Blockchain. The true revolution, let’s be honest, is no longer in the individual parts, but in how these two are beginning to collaborate in ways we never even imagined. It’s not simply a sum of the parts, but a genuine multiplication of their capabilities, leading to the creation of a virtuous cycle.

Why they work well together. Data is everything (but it must be good).

AI is data-hungry—the more it has, the better it performs. The problem is that we often don’t know where this data comes from or if someone has tampered with it. And that’s where the blockchain comes in: it’s like having a digital notary that certifies every single piece of data. If, for example, an AI is trained for medical diagnosis, the blockchain ensures that the results of the examinations have not been tampered with. It’s like having a super-expert doctor who doesn’t know who you are. It’s no longer a matter of “blind trust,” but of having concrete guarantees. The blockchain provides integrity and immutability.

Your Amazon package (really tracked).

Every single stage of a product’s delivery can be recorded on the blockchain as if it were a digital notarized deed. The register’s immutability tells us, without possibility of error: “This arrived from here, at this time, with this temperature.” But the magic, and here’s the best part, is done by AI: while the blockchain gives us the past (through the certificate), AI projects itself into the future: it analyzes that data chain and predicts, for example, when warehouse stock will run out.

In Italy, the ability to track the “Made in Italy” label—from wine to leather, from mechanics to fashion—is increasingly seen as one of the most promising applications. Finally, we will know for certain that that expensive bottle was genuinely produced where the label says, with no unpleasant surprises.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and intellectual property

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is probably the field where the most experimentation is taking place. Protocols use AI to automatically evaluate lending risk, recording everything on the blockchain. I’ve seen protocols that use AI to automatically evaluate lending risk, all recorded on the blockchain. It’s impressive how fast and accurate it can be compared to traditional banking systems.

Intellectual property protection. With AI generating more and more content (texts, images, code), it becomes fundamental to establish who created what and when. The blockchain creates an undeniable “timestamp.”

The journalist’s doubt: but who controls whom?

The parallel between blockchain and AI is that they don’t need a central authority to control everything. Together, they can create applications where different groups collaborate without having to trust one another. Everyone keeps their data private, but all benefit from the shared intelligence.

Are we ready to trust a system where trust is written in code, and not delegated to a person? And what about the fact that issues related to AI “governance and ethics,” such as biases (which are distortions in training data that can lead to unfair or discriminatory results), risk remaining unresolved or being manipulated if they are not addressed with the transparency that only the blockchain can offer.

And then, ultimately, don’t you think it’s fair to also point out that AI and the blockchain may not just be tools, but represent the latest and most powerful stage in the evolution of our civilization, which has always sought to overcome human and geographical limits? If humankind learns to use them responsibly, they will create new job opportunities and can open up previously unimaginable horizons, accelerating scientific discoveries and validations.

Let’s not forget that humankind has always managed to find a way to tame the wildest horses, the purebreds.

I am an Italian novelist born in 1965, born and raised in Milan, Sagittarius zodiac sign. A free thinker and occasional traveller, perpetually searching for myself. I write journalistic articles and novels, dedicating much of my time to research and personal experimentation with principles and techniques for developing human potential. Through my books, I seek to help readers understand that everything that happens has a meaning, that nothing is random, and that certain mysterious situations and encounters that can occur in life (which the various disciplines of major academic institutions do not recognise and sometimes even ignore their existence) happen because one is chosen to serve as an instrument of illumination for personal evolution. I am a tireless explorer of stories that matter, I firmly believe that every piece of data hides a narrative. My approach combines journalistic rigour, narrative creativity and a deep understanding of contemporary digital dynamics. I currently write articles and curate the Made in Italy column for the daily newspaper PordenoneOggi focusing on the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where I tell the story of Italian excellence through an innovative narrative approach. My collaboration with the international magazine CodiceItalia and the English-language publication Brics24news expands my horizons towards emerging markets and complex geopolitical scenarios. My specialisation: - Brand Journalism: i create content that combines corporate storytelling with journalistic credibility; - Data Journalism: i transform numbers and statistics into visually impactful and easily understandable stories I am always in search of the perfect story hidden behind the numbers and the authentic connections that transform a simple article into a memorable reading experience. I protect my articles and books using blockchain technology.
