Iran Faces Massive Educational Crisis: Nearly One Million Children Out of School

Date:

Iran is confronting a severe educational crisis, with nearly one million children excluded from schooling in the 2023–2024 academic year. According to official but heavily censored statistics, over 992,000 students were unable to attend classes, including more than 150,000 elementary-aged children who never enrolled. Observers and human rights watchdogs highlight that this crisis is not merely a social issue but the outcome of systemic policies that prioritize regime survival over education.

The Iranian regime has reportedly transformed schools into vehicles for ideological indoctrination rather than institutions for learning and development. Rural areas face acute shortages of teachers and infrastructure, while substantial resources are directed toward propaganda and repression. Education Minister Alireza Kazemi admitted in August 2025 that approximately 950,000 children are either dropouts or excluded from education, reflecting a nationwide institutional failure rather than localized gaps.

Economic hardship exacerbates the problem, with poverty, rising textbook costs, and the diversion of public funds worsening access to education. Vulnerable groups—including child laborers, undocumented children, and migrants—are disproportionately affected. Analysts warn that the current situation risks producing a generation marked by illiteracy, child labor, and social marginalization.

Experts argue that temporary remedies, such as limited aid or sporadic teacher deployment, are insufficient to tackle the systemic roots of this crisis. As long as the current clerical regime remains in power, education for Iranian children will continue to be undermined, threatening both individual futures and the country’s broader development prospects.
