China has taken a bold step to prepare its next generation for the digital era by making artificial intelligence (AI) education compulsory in schools. Starting this term, students from primary through high school will receive structured lessons in AI, reflecting Beijing’s ambition to lead the global AI race.
In Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, schools have already begun implementing the policy. Authorities require at least 10 hours of AI lessons per year, with flexibility for schools to deliver content through week-long intensives or across science and technology classes.
The curriculum is designed to grow with students, building both technical understanding and awareness of responsible use.
From Smart Speakers to Neural Networks
- Early Primary (Years 1–2): Children are introduced to everyday AI, such as facial recognition and smart speakers, while being taught basic principles of privacy and responsible use.
- Years 3–4: Students begin using AI tools to collect and combine text, images, and audio for simple projects.
- Years 5–6: The focus deepens with core concepts like decision trees, neural networks, and basic algorithms.
- Middle School: Pupils engage with the full AI workflow – from data preparation to model training and evaluation, including generative AI applications.
- High School: The curriculum becomes project-based, where students design their own AI systems and intelligent agents to solve real-world challenges.
Aligning Education with Strategy
The move underscores China’s broader plan to make AI an integral part of economic growth and technological leadership. By embedding AI in education early, Beijing aims to normalize the technology, cultivate skilled talent, and position the country as a global AI powerhouse.
Though still in its early rollout, China’s AI curriculum signals a long-term strategy: ensuring future generations see AI not as an abstract concept but as second nature. As other nations debate regulations and ethics, China is already training millions of students to be AI-literate citizens and innovators.
