Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Cameroon: UNFPA Situation Report Highlights

Date:

The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Cameroon continues to escalate, affecting millions and creating urgent needs for support. UNFPA’s latest situation report highlights the challenges and responses in critical regions, including the Far North, North West, and South West.

Key Statistics:

  • Total people affected: 3,400,000
  • Women of reproductive age: 816,000
  • Estimated pregnant women: 88,600
  • People targeted with SRH services: 367,000
  • People targeted with GBV programmes: 594,000

Highlights of the Situation:

  • The crisis is driven by conflict, non-state armed group (NSAG) activity, climate shocks, and mass displacement, leading to significant humanitarian needs.
  • Severe flooding in the Far North region has impacted over 459,000 people, caused 30 fatalities, and inflicted extensive damage to infrastructure and agriculture.
  • From July to October 2024, floods devastated Mayo-Danay and Logone-and-Chari divisions, destroying 56,000 homes, essential health facilities, and tens of thousands of hectares of crops.
  • The lack of infrastructure leaves women and girls without access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, exacerbating food insecurity for vulnerable populations.
  • UNFPA provided SRH and gender-based violence (GBV) services to 14,830 individuals in the Far North, North West, and South West regions in October 2024.
  • Despite efforts, a funding gap of $7,145,975 limits UNFPA’s ability to provide life-saving services.

Regional Overview: In the Far North, floods caused by heavy rainfall destroyed homes, health facilities, and agricultural land, leaving communities displaced and vulnerable. In the North West and South West regions, NSAGs enforced lockdowns and engaged in clashes with government forces, disrupting public life and endangering civilians.

The combination of climatic shocks, ongoing conflict, and limited funding has created a dire situation for millions of Cameroonians. Immediate attention and increased funding are crucial to address the escalating humanitarian needs.
