Italy and Tanzania Collaborate to Strengthen Cultural and Economic Ties

Date:

Italy has reinforced its dedication to fostering cultural and economic connections with Tanzania by supporting the 17th edition of the Swahili Fashion Week and Awards. This iconic event, scheduled for December 6–8, 2024, at Parthenon Hall in Dar es Salaam, is set to celebrate African creativity under the theme, “Discover What Makes Africa Beautiful.”

A Platform for Cultural Exchange and Economic Empowerment

Italian Ambassador to Tanzania, Giuseppe Sean Coppola, announced the Embassy’s partnership with the event during a press conference in Dar es Salaam. Collaborating with the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and Tanzanian designers, the initiative aims to promote cultural exchange and enhance economic opportunities.

“This event not only highlights the incredible talents of designers but also provides them with platforms to earn livelihoods and contribute to the national economy,” Ambassador Coppola stated.

Acting Director of the National Arts Council (BASATA), Edward Buganga, further emphasized the importance of Swahili Fashion Week in promoting Kiswahili culture and boosting employment opportunities, thereby strengthening Tanzania’s economy.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Designers

Mustafa Hassanali, the founder and CEO of Swahili Fashion Week, encouraged young designers and models to leverage the event as a gateway to international markets.

“Have the courage to showcase your talents. This platform is an opportunity to champion the ‘Made in Africa’ initiative and connect with the global fashion industry,” he said.

Sustainability and Creativity at the Forefront

In alignment with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s campaign for clean cooking energy and environmental sustainability, the event will spotlight collections crafted from sustainable materials and ethical production techniques.

Over 40 local and international designers, including Dida (Italy), Iterik (Uganda), and Kushweet (Kenya), will participate alongside Tanzanian talents such as Reen Fashion Flair and M2MOKO.

The awards ceremony will honor excellence in 27 categories, with Nexia Tanzania ensuring a transparent and fair voting process.
