Swiss Youth Embrace AI: A Growing Trend

Date:

The use of artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT has become a part of everyday life for Swiss youth, with one in three using them weekly, according to a study published on December 1, 2024. While these tools offer remarkable convenience, experts emphasize the need for strong critical thinking skills to ensure their healthy and effective use.

The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) has been analyzing young people’s media habits through the “James” study since 2010. Conducted every two years and commissioned by Swisscom, the study examines the leisure and media behavior of nearly 1,200 young individuals aged 12 to 19.

This year’s findings highlight a new trend: the rise of artificial intelligence tools. In 2024, one-third of the surveyed youth reported using AI platforms like ChatGPT on a weekly basis.

AI as an Information Hub
Young people primarily use AI for gathering information, finding it simpler and more intuitive than traditional search engines. Just type a question, and the tool delivers a clear and concise answer.

However, this convenience comes with challenges. Despite their sophistication, AI tools can occasionally provide incorrect or misleading information. Experts stress the importance of verifying AI-generated content and maintaining a critical approach when relying on these tools.

As Swiss youth increasingly incorporate AI into their lives, fostering media literacy and critical thinking becomes essential to navigate the digital age responsibly.
