Lando Norris Sets Record-Breaking Lusail Lap, Edges McLaren Closer to Constructors’ Championship

Date:

The Lusail International Circuit roared to life on Friday as McLaren’s Lando Norris delivered a sensational qualifying performance at the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix 2024. Clocking a record-breaking lap of 1:21.012, Norris outpaced Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to secure pole position for Saturday’s Sprint race, solidifying McLaren’s push for their first Constructors’ Championship since 1998.

A Historic Lap at Lusail
Norris’ record-breaking lap shaved over two seconds off the previous best of 1:23.196, set by Max Verstappen in 2021. “It felt like the fastest circuit of the year,” Norris remarked, exuding confidence after his stellar performance. McLaren’s momentum at Lusail continues to impress, following teammate Oscar Piastri’s maiden victory at the circuit last year.

Piastri added to McLaren’s strong showing by finishing third in qualifying, further enhancing the team’s chances of securing crucial points.

The Constructors’ Championship Equation
McLaren enters the weekend with a 24-point lead over Ferrari and a 53-point advantage over Red Bull. If the team outpaces their rivals in the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix, they could clinch the Constructors’ title before the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

However, Ferrari and Red Bull remain in contention, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz starting Saturday’s Sprint from competitive positions. Red Bull’s challenge appears tougher as Sergio Perez continues to struggle, crashing out in Q1 during Sprint Qualifying.

Sprint Race and Beyond
While McLaren has set the tone, Saturday’s Sprint race remains a challenge, particularly with Verstappen’s formidable record in Sprint events. The Dutch driver has won 11 of the 17 Sprints since their inception in 2021, underscoring his dominance in this format.

Adding to the excitement, fans can look forward to a packed schedule featuring F2, F1 Academy, and Carrera Cup races. Lusail’s “Super Saturday” promises high-stakes action and intense competition, setting the stage for a thrilling weekend of motorsport.
