Over 8,400 Young Health Professionals Placed in Internships and Community Service

Date:

The South African Department of Health has successfully placed 8,403 young health professionals in internships and community service positions for the 2025 cycle. This milestone was achieved with efficiency and minimal challenges, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s healthcare workforce.

Record Placement Success for 2025

Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Health, announced that all eligible medical graduates had been allocated positions for internships and community service starting in January 2025. The placements include:

  • 2,108 Medical Internships
  • 6,295 Community Service Positions

Professionals across various healthcare fields—such as diagnostic radiographers, physiotherapists, psychologists, dentists, and pharmacists—have been successfully placed. The only exception is 73 environmental health officers, whose allocations are still under discussion with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the Border Management Authority.

Placement Highlights

  • 6,740 graduates were placed within their top five preferred choices.
  • 768 graduates secured placements within one of their three chosen provinces.
  • Special Considerations: 1,520 applicants received individualized assistance, with 1,399 successfully placed within their top five preferences.

Despite a few appeals from applicants contesting placements, 7,701 professionals have already accepted their positions.

Addressing Healthcare Needs Amid Challenges

While these placements address critical staffing needs, the Health Department acknowledges the nation’s call for more health inspectors, especially in light of food-borne illness outbreaks. Discussions are ongoing to find permanent solutions to these gaps.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

The placement process for 2025 began with a three-day workshop in July 2024, involving provincial health coordinators and professional associations. The workshop reviewed and updated Internship and Community Service Placement Guidelines to enhance user experience and ensure a fair, transparent process.

The department’s collaborative efforts with various stakeholders reflect its commitment to building a robust healthcare system equipped to meet the country’s needs.
