Nigeria Shares Data Protection Expertise with Somalia

The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is taking significant steps to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing across African nations to enhance data privacy and protection frameworks. This commitment was underscored during a recent visit by a delegation of nine data protection experts from Somalia to the NDPC headquarters in Abuja.

The visit was part of a study tour to explore Nigeria’s robust data protection ecosystem, including its unique regulatory models and enforcement mechanisms.

Building Strategic Partnerships for Data Privacy

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, highlighted the importance of fostering partnerships across African nations. He emphasized that such collaborations strengthen regulatory frameworks and improve enforcement strategies for data protection and privacy.

The delegation from Somalia, led by key digital experts, expressed great interest in Nigeria’s approach to data protection. Somalia’s Ambassador to Nigeria commended the initiative, describing it as a transformative opportunity for the Somali Data Protection Authority. He expressed optimism that the knowledge gained from the study tour would positively influence Somalia’s data protection systems.

A Transformative Engagement

The training sessions and discussions provided the Somali delegation with practical insights into implementing effective data protection measures. Dr. Olatunji further noted that this strategic engagement would bolster bilateral relations between Nigeria and Somalia while positioning both nations as leaders in data privacy on the global stage.

With this initiative, the NDPC aims to promote a unified approach to data protection within Africa, ensuring that privacy frameworks align with international best practices.

Conclusion

The study tour signifies a crucial step towards fostering a cooperative approach to data protection across African nations. By sharing expertise and strategies, Nigeria and Somalia are setting an example of how collaboration can drive transformative change in digital privacy and data management.
