Electric cars are making waves in Switzerland, with the latest data highlighting their growing popularity. In 2021 alone, 31,823 new electric vehicles (EVs) were registered, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to sustainable mobility. While EVs accounted for 13% of the 238,481 new vehicle registrations, they’re sharing the road with other types of vehicles, including hybrids, gasoline, and diesel-powered cars.
The Rise of Electric Cars in Switzerland
Electric vehicles have quickly become a force to reckon with on Swiss streets. Among the most popular models, the Tesla Model 3 took the crown as the best-selling car in 2021, with 5,074 units registered. Other favorites included the Skoda Octavia (4,974), Audi Q3 (3,960), and Volkswagen Tiguan (3,842). This data underscores a growing consumer preference for EVs, signaling progress in reducing carbon emissions.
However, EVs aren’t dominating alone. Hybrids made up 31% of new registrations, while diesel and gasoline vehicles accounted for 42% and 14%, respectively. Notably, 48% of new cars were 4×4 models, which traditionally have a reputation for higher emissions. Yet today, many 4×4 vehicles are highly efficient and come in smaller, eco-friendlier packages.
Energy Efficiency of Electric Vehicles
Not all EVs are created equal when it comes to energy efficiency. For instance, the yet-to-be-released Lightyear One boasts an impressive efficiency of 104 Wh/km, significantly lower than the 281 Wh/km of the Mercedes EQV 300 Extra-Long. Assuming the same emissions per unit of electricity, the Lightyear One would operate with just 37% of the carbon footprint of the Mercedes.
Interestingly, vehicle size and weight don’t always correlate with efficiency. The Tesla Model 3, weighing 1,835 kg, achieves an impressive 150 Wh/km efficiency, outperforming the lighter Renault Electric Twingo (1,208 kg) with 164 Wh/km. This variability highlights the importance of considering efficiency alongside other factors when choosing an EV.
Challenges and Future Outlook
While Switzerland’s clean energy generation capacity is a strong foundation for the growth of EVs, the increasing number of electric vehicles could strain the system. It’s essential for the country to continue investing in renewable energy to ensure the environmental benefits of EVs are fully realized.
As EV technology advances and adoption grows, Switzerland is poised to lead in sustainable transportation. However, the journey toward greener streets will require innovation, public awareness, and infrastructure development to keep up with the rising demand for electric vehicles.
