Brazilian President Lula Cancels Trips to COP Summits Following Head Injury

Date:

President Lula COP has cancelled his upcoming trips to two major UN climate summits—COP16 in Colombia and COP29 in Azerbaijan—following medical advice, according to a statement from his office on Friday.

This decision comes after President Lula COP, 78, sustained a head injury in a fall last weekend.

Medical tests conducted on Friday confirmed Lula’s condition is “stable” despite the trauma, which resulted in stitches and a minor brain haemorrhage.

Initially, Lula’s office announced his withdrawal from COP16, which is currently underway in Colombia, and later confirmed to Reuters that he would also be unable to attend COP29 next month.

The Brazilian leader had previously cancelled a planned visit to Russia for a BRICS summit, also due to health considerations.

Although cleared to continue his official duties in Brasilia, President Lula COP will undergo additional medical evaluations within five days, as per a medical report.

Lula was initially scheduled to depart for Colombia on Monday. His absence at both climate conferences marks a notable gap as Brazil plays a key role in global environmental discussions.
