Tanzania’s Path to an Innovation-Driven Economy: Local Technology Development

Date:

Tanzania is making significant investments in Information Communication and Technology (ICT), positioning itself to become an innovation-driven economy by 2050. The country’s universities and colleges are playing a crucial role in this transformation, channeling resources into ICT initiatives.

Investing in Local Technologies: A Key Priority for Tanzania

Experts have emphasized the importance of Tanzania’s investment in developing its own technologies instead of relying on imported ones. During the 8th Science Technology and Communication Exhibition (Stice) held in Dar es Salaam, experts discussed the country’s preparedness for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. They stressed that investment in technology development must go hand in hand with the preparation of local talent who will drive innovation.

Harnessing Africa’s Potential for Innovation

With a projected population of 2.4 billion by 2050, Africa offers a vast pool of data and a large workforce, making it an attractive market for technological advancements.

The University of Dodoma Vice Chancellor, Prof Lughano Kusilika, highlighted the need to assess the effects of new technologies before deploying them. He cited the example of the artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, challenging the evaluation processes in universities. To keep up with rapidly advancing technologies, colleges must adapt their curricula and evaluation methods.

The Role of Local Technologies in National Security and Independence

Dr. Hashim Mshinda, former Costech director general, expressed concern over the reliance on foreign technologies. He emphasized the importance of Tanzania developing its own technologies to safeguard national security and avoid dependence on other countries. Prof. Simon Msanjila, former Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Mining, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for local institutions to conduct research and innovation. He highlighted the significance of creating an enabling environment for technology development.

To accelerate Tanzania’s progress, there is a call to empower local institutions involved in technology. Creating a conducive environment for research and innovation will foster the development of homegrown technologies. By nurturing local talent and investing in infrastructure, Tanzania can position itself as one of a leading player in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driving economic growth and ensuring self-reliance in technological advancements.
