Kenya’s Kiptum Wins London Marathon in 2nd Fastest Time

Date:

23-year-old Kenyan Marathon runner, Kelvin Kiptum won the London Marathon on Sunday, finishing in the second-fastest time in history.

The 23-year-old Kenyan runner set the race record in 2 hours, 1 minute, 25 seconds, falling 16 seconds short of Eliud Kipchoge’s world record.

“I am so happy with the result,” said Kiptum. “I don’t know what to say right now, I am just grateful. The course felt good, there was a bit of rain around halfway but it was OK.

“I enjoy doing the marathons, it is good preparation for me. I loved it, I am very happy.”

Kiptum, 23, also won his marathon debut in Valencia, Spain, in December in 2:01:53, becoming the third-fastest man in history at the time.

On Sunday, he surpassed Ethiopian icon Kenenisa Bekele as the second fastest in history, breaking Kipchoge’s 2019 course record of 2:02:37, and outdistanced Kenyan runner-up Geoffrey Kamworor by 2 minutes, 58 seconds.

Kiptum was on track for a 2:03 finish before his late surge. He finished the second half in 59:45 minutes.
