After hours of shutdown, Kenya’s capital airport resumes flight operations.

Date:

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said on Monday that flight operations at the country’s principal airport in Nairobi had resumed following the evacuation of the stranded aircraft.

The KAA stated that regular operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) had resumed following the resolution of a runaway situation that happened at about 8 a.m. local time.

“The incident involved a cargo aircraft destined for Amsterdam but forced to abort take off due to technical issues,” the authority said in a statement issued Monday evening.

According to the report, 11 of the 16 rear tires were punctured as a consequence of the event, and the operation of removing the cargo jet off the runway necessitated the evacuation of 100 tonnes of cargo as well as the repair of the damaged tires before it could be towed to safety.

“The JKIA runway is now open, and operations at the airport have resumed. Disabled aircraft have been cleared from the runway,” the KAA said.

Kenyan aviation authorities expressed their disappointment in the situation and recommended passengers contact their individual airlines for the most up-to-date information on the status of their flights.

The issue had previously prompted a Kenya Airways flight bound for JKIA to be diverted to Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport.
