US provides $560m fund to support Tanzania’s development

US Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Tanzania as part of her tri-national tour of Africa, which is her first visit to the continent since assuming office. Harris met with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in trade and democracy.

Positive Developments in Bilateral Relations

The U.S. has always been committed to democracy and to working to improve women’s and children’s health, nutrition and food security, and to fighting HIV/AIDS. The visit was seen as a significant step towards enhancing diplomatic ties between the two nations. The United States and Tanzania have a trade relationship valued at $424 million (£344 million) per year, while American investment in Tanzania is $1 billion.

The US is one of Tanzania’s top trading partners. Harris announced that the US would provide $560m to Tanzania to support its efforts to improve democracy and trade.

Harris praised Tanzania’s efforts to strengthen democracy and promote reforms aimed at expanding trade and investment. She acknowledged the country’s commitment to democracy, and expressed her confidence in Tanzania’s economic potential. Harris also met with young entrepreneurs in the Tanzanian Startup Association (TAS) to discuss ways to boost innovation and entrepreneurship in the country.

Welcoming Harris to Tanzania

Tanzanians cheerfully greeted Harris. Buses in the city of Dar es Salaam were decorated with Harris’s photos, and there were colourful traditional dances to welcome her. And the visit was met with great enthusiasm from the business community. Many saw this visit as an endorsement of President Samia’s reforms.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan described Harris’s visit as a milestone for Tanzania, and expressed her gratitude for the US’s support for the country’s development agenda. She emphasised the importance of strengthening the US-Tanzania partnership and working together to address common challenges.

In overall, Harris’s visit to Tanzania is a positive development in the US’s relationship with the African continent. It demonstrates the US’s commitment to supporting democratic governance, promoting economic growth and development, and strengthening bilateral relations with African nations.
