Trevor Noah wins Emmy Award for best variety talk series

Date:

South African comedian and television host, Trevor Noah has won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series with the “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah”.

He received the award during the 75th Emmy Awards, becoming the first African and the first Black person to win an Emmy Award in this category.

This is the first time that the show has received this prestigious award since prior host Jon Stewart’s final year on the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Noah quit The Daily Show in 2022, and his farewell episode aired on December 8, that year.

The 2023 Emmy Awards were postponed until this year owing to the Hollywood strike, therefore Noah’s final season on the programme is only now being recognised.

The Daily Show outperformed The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Problem With Jon Stewart, and Late Night With Seth Meyers.

this story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful. Thank you so much to the team and the person I always thank, the crazy genius Jon Stewart. Thank you for calling me up and asking me to come join you on this crazy journey

In his address, Noah also joked about ‘beating’ John Oliver, who was not on the same level as The Daily Show. The first Emmy for a scripted variety series went to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

Noah said in his speech:

“I told you! I told you we would beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category. We did it! We got rid of John Oliver!”

Noah also thanked the members of The Daily Show’s team:

“I want to start by thanking the crazy Africans who followed me to this country, David Kibuuka and Joseph Opio, David Meyer, my partner in crime, the writers and the team, Roy Wood Jr. from the very beginning, Jordan Klepper, whose flight got cancelled.”

“Showrunner Jen Flanz, this woman rode with me through the trenches. Thank you so much to the team and everyone who gave us an opportunity,” Noah continued.

During the event that took place on Martin Luther King Day, three Black actresses emerged as significant winners, with Ayo Edebiri, of Nigerian descent, receiving the outstanding supporting actress award.
