South Sudanese president promises first elections since independence

Date:

South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, has been plagued by numerous challenges since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011. President Salva Kiir, who led the nation to independence, has pledged that the long-awaited elections will take place as scheduled in 2024, with his candidacy for the presidency. This blog post delves into the significance of these upcoming elections and the context in which they are set to occur.

South Sudan’s Journey to Stability

After a devastating five-year civil war that claimed the lives of nearly 400,000 people, President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar signed a peace agreement in 2018. Since then, South Sudan has faced subsequent challenges, including natural disasters, hunger, political unrest, and slow implementation of the peace agreement. The United Nations has criticized South Sudanese leaders for their alleged involvement in violence, human rights violations, and mismanagement of public funds.

Postponed Elections and the Fragile Unity Government

Originally scheduled for February 2023, the elections were postponed due to the government’s failure to fulfill crucial clauses of the peace agreement, including the drafting of a constitution. In August, President Kiir and Vice President Machar extended the transitional government for an additional two years to address the difficulties in implementing the peace agreement.

President Kiir’s Commitment to Elections

President Salva Kiir expressed his gratitude to members of his SPLM party for their support of his presidential candidacy in 2024. He referred to this upcoming event as a “historic event” and reiterated his commitment to implementing the remaining chapters of the peace agreement before the elections. Observers predict that Vice President Riek Machar, President Kiir’s long-time rival, will also declare his candidacy for the presidency.

The Importance of Inclusive and Credible Elections

The United Nations’ special envoy to South Sudan, Nicholas Haysom, has emphasized the significance of 2023 as a crucial year for the country. He called for “inclusive and credible” elections in 2024, stressing the need for a fair and transparent process that allows the South Sudanese people to exercise their democratic rights. These elections hold the potential to shape the future trajectory of the nation and pave the way for stability and prosperity.

Conclusion

South Sudan’s upcoming elections in 2024 mark a pivotal moment in the country’s history. President Salva Kiir’s commitment to running for president and ensuring the implementation of the peace agreement before the elections demonstrates his determination to lead the nation towards stability. It remains to be seen whether these elections will bring about the much-needed political transformation and address the challenges that South Sudan has faced since its independence. The international community will closely monitor the process, hoping for inclusive and credible elections that will set South Sudan on a path of peace, development, and prosperity.
