M-PESA Ethiopia Integrates with EthSwitch, Connecting 15 Banks for Full Interoperability 🇪🇹

Date:

M-PESA Ethiopia has achieved a major milestone in advancing financial inclusion by successfully completing its integration with the national inter-bank payment network, EthSwitch. This critical technical integration immediately enables customers of 15 partner banks in Ethiopia to perform seamless mobile and traditional banking transactions. This means bank customers can now directly send money to M-PESA wallets, and M-PESA merchants can efficiently receive bank payments directly from these partner institutions, dramatically increasing the platform’s utility and reach across the country.

The integration with EthSwitch, which manages Ethiopia’s automated teller machines (ATMs) and point-of-sale (PoS) terminals, signifies a crucial step toward full interoperability between mobile money services and the traditional banking sector. This enhanced connectivity is expected to accelerate the use of digital financial services, overcoming one of the major barriers to mobile money adoption: the difficulty in transferring funds between different financial ecosystems. By making the movement of money frictionless, M-PESA is better positioned to serve both urban and remote rural populations. This development is highly strategic for Ethiopia’s digital transformation agenda. By fostering a more interconnected financial system, the integration is expected to reduce reliance on cash, significantly advance financial inclusion, and further drive the growth of the mobile money sector, which is championed by the Ethiopian government as a key priority for economic development.
