Kenya Launches Drone Programme to Combat Quelea Birds and Protect Crops

Date:

The Kenyan government has unveiled an innovative aerial drone programme to tackle the quelea bird infestation that has wreaked havoc on wheat and barley farms. This groundbreaking initiative aims to protect crops, secure farmers’ livelihoods, and enhance food security in one of Kenya’s key agricultural regions.

A Timely Response to a Growing Crisis

Speaking at the programme’s launch in Mau Narok, Narok County, Dr. Paul Ronoh, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Agriculture, described the intervention as both timely and effective.

“This exercise ensures that within five days, the quelea bird menace will be brought under control,” said Dr. Ronoh, highlighting the urgency of the intervention. The aerial use of drones to apply bird repellents represents a modern approach to agricultural pest control, combining precision with efficiency.

Restoring Confidence Among Farmers

The initiative goes beyond addressing the immediate crisis. By safeguarding the current harvest, it boosts farmers’ confidence to continue planting, ensuring the stability of Kenya’s food systems. “This innovative solution not only salvages this season’s harvest but also restores faith among farmers to keep investing in agriculture,” Dr. Ronoh explained.

Scaling the Programme Nationwide

The government plans to expand the drone programme to other regions facing similar challenges. This is part of a broader, proactive strategy to address agricultural threats and ensure farmers are well-prepared for future planting seasons. “Next season, we will be better equipped to respond promptly, leaving no farmer vulnerable,” Dr. Ronoh emphasized.

Supporting Farmers Beyond Pest Control

In addition to tackling pest infestations, the government is committed to addressing other challenges faced by farmers. Dr. Ronoh urged millers to expedite payments for maize deliveries, enabling farmers to prepare for upcoming planting seasons. He also assured farmers of government support in settling outstanding debts.

A Collaborative Effort for Food Security

Dr. Ronoh reiterated the importance of collaboration between national and county governments to achieve agricultural sustainability. “This intervention demonstrates our dedication to protecting farmers and ensuring the wellbeing of millions of families across the country,” he concluded.

This drone programme marks a significant step forward in Kenya’s agricultural innovation, ensuring food security and supporting farmers’ resilience in the face of persistent challenges.
