IIT Madras, the top-ranked educational institute in India, is making history by launching its first international campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The Zanzibar Campus aims to strengthen the educational partnership between India and Tanzania, offering two full-time academic programs in Data Science and AI. The campus will have a permanent location spread across 200 acres on Zanzibar Island, with the master plan being developed by experts from IIT Madras.

IIT Madras Establishes First International Campus in Tanzania

The expansion of Indian higher education outside the country, as encouraged by the National Education Policy 2020, has led to the realization of the Zanzibar Campus. The government of Tanzania has shown strong interest in this educational collaboration, and discussions with ministry officials and academic institutions have emphasized the importance of Data Science in the country.

Prof. Preeti Aghalayam, Dean of School of Science & Engineering at IIT Madras highlighted the positive impact of this international venture. The campus will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, research centers, and innovation hubs, providing an environment conducive to interdisciplinary education and technological innovation.

Cutting-Edge Education and Research Opportunities

The Zanzibar Campus will initially offer a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and a 2-year Master of Technology in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The admission process for the first academic year, scheduled to begin in October 2023, is currently underway, with a total student intake of 70.

An MoU was signed between India and Tanzania, solidifying the partnership, while scholarships are being offered to Tanzanian/Zanzibari citizens to study at IIT Madras in Chennai, starting from July 2023.

The Zanzibar Campus is set to play a significant role in the internationalization efforts of IIT Madras, with plans to increase the number of international students, foster joint degree programs, and enhance faculty and student mobility. The institute aims to create a dynamic and vibrant academic environment, nurturing young talents and providing opportunities for growth and innovation.

With the support of the local government, the Zanzibar Campus will soon offer comfortable accommodations for students, dining facilities, a dispensary, and playgrounds. Scholarships will be provided to deserving students, further promoting access to quality education.

The launch of IIT Madras’ Zanzibar Campus marks an important milestone in the institution’s history and opens up new avenues for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the promotion of technological advancements in East Africa.
