The Indian film industry celebrates that track from the Telugu blockbuster movie RRR has been nominated for an Oscar. The song, “Naatu Naatu,” made history earlier this year when it won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song and the Critics Choice award for the Best Song. This marks the first time an Indian film song has been nominated for an Academy Award.
Global Sensation
“Naatu Naatu” became a global sensation after the film’s release in the United States last year. Audiences were captivated by the quick tempo and synchronized choreography, and the song went viral on social media. Composed by MM Keeravani with lyrics penned by Chandrabose, the song features in a historical fantasy film that tells the fictional story of two revolutionaries who fight against British rule in India.
Unique Story Behind the Song
The song’s success is attributed to its choreographer, Prem Rakshit, who composed about 95 dance steps for the track. The song is a story within the larger story of the film. It culminates in a marathon dance-off as all the dancers kick up a storm, slowly collapsing one by one in exhaustion until only the heroes remain standing. The two heroes, played by Ram Charan and Jr NTR, then turn to take each other on in a dance competition, conveying the film’s themes of friendship, rivalry, and solidarity.
In front of the Mariinskyi Palace
Although the track was shot in front of the Mariinskyi Palace, a gorgeous sea-blue structure in Ukraine, Rajamouli aimed to recreate the atmosphere of an Indian village. The team shot the song over 15 days, working 12 hours a day with 150 dancers and a crew of 200 people. Rakshit said that every time he okayed a take, Rajamouli would ask for “one more” shot, ensuring the dancers were in sync.
“Naatu Naatu” has continued to captivate audiences globally, with fans trying to replicate the intricate foot swivels and catchy dance moves.
“Naatu Naatu” is no longer just the song of the film. It now belongs to the public. People of different age groups and cultures have embraced it,” said Ram Charan in an interview. With an Oscar nomination and a performance at the award ceremony in tow, the excitement around the song is at an all-time high. The filmmakers are hoping to repeat their earlier success and bring home the Oscar for Best Original Song.
