India keep Semifinal hopes alive with 72-run win over Zimbabwe at T20 World Cup

Date:

Team India secured a crucial 72-run victory against Zimbabwe in the ICC T20 World Cup Super Eight phase at Chennai on Thursday, keeping their semifinal hopes alive. Fifties from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya, combined with a strong bowling performance from Arshdeep Singh, powered India to a commanding total of 256/4, their highest ever in T20 World Cup history.

India’s win means they, along with the West Indies, both hold one win and one loss in the Super Eight stage, setting up the March 1 clash between the two sides as a virtual knockout for the second semifinal spot. South Africa have already qualified with two victories.

Zimbabwe was invited to bat first but India posted 256/4, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 55 off 30 balls, including four fours and four sixes. Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 50 from 23 deliveries, hitting two fours and four sixes, while Tilak Varma contributed an explosive 44 not out from 16 balls, also striking multiple boundaries and sixes.

In response, Zimbabwe showed resilience, finishing at 184/6 in 20 overs. Brian Bennett was the standout with an unbeaten 97 off 59 balls, striking eight fours and six sixes. Captain Sikandar Raza added 31 runs from 21 balls.

Arshdeep Singh took three wickets for 24 runs to lead India’s bowling effort, while Varun Chakravarthy, Axar Patel, and Shivam Dube claimed one wicket apiece.

Zimbabwe started steadily against Arshdeep Singh but began taking more risks after the powerplay, with Bennett and Raza putting together important partnerships. However, wickets fell at crucial moments, including Raza caught at long-on off Arshdeep’s bowling and Ryan Burl trapped lbw the same over.

Arshdeep also dismissed Tony Munyonga and Tashinga Musekiwa late in the innings. Zimbabwe’s chase ended short with Brad Evans unbeaten on one.

India’s innings had an aggressive start with openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who returned to the playing XI, adding 48 runs in 22 balls. Samson scored 24 runs with one four and two sixes before his dismissal. Ishan Kishan supported with 38 runs from 24 balls, sharing a 72-run partnership with Sharma.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav scored a quick 33 before falling in the 15th over. Varma and Hardik Pandya then shared an 84-run partnership, highlighted by 40 runs scored in overs 18 and 19, enabling India to set a formidable target.

India’s 17 sixes in the innings matched their joint highest in T20 World Cup history and they have now hit 63 sixes in this tournament, the most by any team in a single edition, surpassed only by the West Indies’ 66 sixes.

Zimbabwe bowlers who took wickets were Blessing Muzarabani, Tonitenda Maposa, Richard Ngarava, and Sikandar Raza.

Brief scores: India 256/4 (Abhishek Sharma 55, Hardik Pandya 50; Blessing Muzarabani 1/43) beat Zimbabwe 184/6 (Brian Bennett 97, Sikandar Raza 31; Arshdeep Singh 3/24).
