In a bid to strengthen tourism infrastructure and offer visitors a new way to explore the national capital, the Delhi government is set to roll out double-decker tourist bus services connecting some of the city’s most prominent landmarks. The service is expected to begin around February 20, 2026, coinciding with the first anniversary of the Delhi government.
The initiative, led by the Delhi Tourism Department, is aimed at creating a seamless sightseeing experience while also promoting the use of sustainable, electric public transport in the capital.
A new way to explore the capital
Officials say the double-decker buses have been designed as more than just a transport option. The service will function as a guided sightseeing tour, allowing tourists to cover multiple attractions in a single journey while enjoying elevated, panoramic views of Delhi’s historic and contemporary landmarks.
Initially, a limited fleet will be deployed, including electric and CNG-powered double-decker buses. Trial runs are expected to take place before full-scale operations begin.
Proposed route and landmarks covered
While the final route map and timings are yet to be formally notified, officials confirmed that the buses will operate on a national landmark-centric circuit, focusing largely on central Delhi and the Lutyens’ zone, where road width and clearances are suitable for double-decker operations.
Each bus will be able to accommodate up to 63 passengers, with seating available on both upper and lower decks. The fare is intended to cover guided commentary, comfortable travel and access to multiple sightseeing locations as part of a curated tourism experience.
Guided tours and evening rides planned
To make the journey more engaging, a live guide will accompany passengers and provide insights into the historical, cultural and architectural significance of the landmarks along the route. Officials said this feature is expected to appeal to families, school groups and first-time visitors to Delhi.
The tourism department is also considering evening and night tours, which would allow passengers to view illuminated monuments and experience the capital after sunset. Evening tours are tentatively expected to begin around 6 pm, though exact timings will be announced closer to launch.
Focus on sustainability and clean mobility
The double-decker buses have been supplied by Ashok Leyland under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. Powered by electricity, the buses will operate with zero tailpipe emissions and reduced noise, aligning with Delhi’s broader goals of promoting clean and sustainable urban mobility
Officials said the move is particularly significant at a time when air pollution remains a major concern in the capital.
Part of a larger tourism push
The launch of the double-decker tourist buses follows Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s announcement to develop a flagship tourist circuit centred on national landmarks. Authorities believe the elevated seating and guided format will offer a more immersive and convenient sightseeing experience, helping position Delhi as both an administrative hub and a must-visit tourist destination.
With trial runs expected ahead of the official rollout, the service is likely to be gradually expanded based on demand and feedback. Once fully operational, the double-decker buses could become a key attraction for both domestic and international travellers looking to explore Delhi in a relaxed, organised and environmentally friendly way.
