ILO-NORAD Initiative Drives Green Skills Integration into Ethiopia’s Vocational Training 🇪🇹

Date:

The International Labour Organization (ILO), in partnership with the Norwegian development agency (NORAD), is spearheading a “Green TVT” (Technical and Vocational Training) initiative in Ethiopia aimed at aligning the workforce with the demands of the emerging green economy. A four-day workshop, held recently in Arba Minch from October 28 to 31, 2025, brought together training institutions, instructors, and Ministry of Labour and Skills (MoLS) officials to embed sustainability and green-economy skills into Ethiopia’s TVET system.

The core goal of the program is to foster expertise in sectors critical for sustainable development and inclusive growth, such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, waste management, and green manufacturing. The training emphasizes concepts like the circular economy and waste-to-value strategies. Participants developed action plans to integrate these sustainability principles directly into existing competency standards and institutional frameworks, moving beyond mere “greening the campus” to creating safe, efficient, and sustainable work practices. This initiative is crucial for supporting Ethiopia’s national Climate Resilience Green Economy Strategy and its ambitious Ten-Year Development Plan. By equipping TVET institutions and their trainees with these vital “green skills,” the program addresses a critical skills gap, empowering youth and marginalized groups to secure sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the nation’s long-term economic resilience.
