The latest Open Doors Report, published by the U.S. Embassy in Accra, reveals that a record-breaking 9,394 Ghanaians are currently studying in the United States during the 2023-2024 academic year. This significant milestone places Ghana among the top 25 countries worldwide sending students to U.S. institutions, with the country ranking 18th overall.
Impressive Growth in Numbers
The report highlights a 45.2% increase in the number of Ghanaian students compared to previous years, setting an all-time high for the country. Particularly notable is the surge in students pursuing graduate degrees: Ghana ranks as the 9th largest source of international graduate students in the United States, with 6,337 Ghanaians enrolled in graduate programs—a remarkable 54% increase from the prior academic year.
Scholarships and Financial Support
The report also underscores the financial achievements of Ghanaian students. They collectively secured $9.2 million in scholarships, enabling them to study at over 680 universities across all 50 U.S. states. This financial support reflects the strong academic potential of Ghanaian students and the recognition they receive from American educational institutions.
Broader Trends in Graduate Education
On a broader scale, the report indicates that the total number of international graduate students in the U.S. rose from 50,199 in the 2022-2023 academic year to 56,199 in 2023-2024, marking a 13% increase. This trend reflects a growing demand for advanced education in the United States among students worldwide.
