From R&B to Afrobeat: 10 Ghanaian Female Musicians to Follow

Darkua Chinonye Wristberg, known professionally as Darkua, blends Afrobeats and AfroSoul to create innovative music. She debuted her single “Amalelor” in 2021 and was nominated for the 2022 ‘3 Music Award’ as “Emerging Woman Of The Year.”

Maame Esi Essilfie, with a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree, started making music for fun and transitioned to pursue a career in music in 2019. Her music style is described as sultry pop-infused and has collaborated with over 30 artists and 20 producers, including Darkua and Kwame Yesu.

Deborah Mawunyo Kunneh, known professionally as Kuneli or Debbie Kuneli, blends RnB, Afrobeat, Afropop, and Soul in her music. She continues to release music and has an upcoming single called “Better Days” to be released on May 5, 2023.

Queen Drie, whose real name is Adrien Amponsah, is a new Fusion artist who blends genres and has been referred to as “The Queen” in the Chicago entertainment community.

TiTi Owusu, also known as Abigail Tiwaah Owusu, is a Ghanaian singer and songwriter who defies genres. She was the first runner-up in the 2014 Vodafone Icons competition and is signed to Skillions Global. TiTi’s powerful live performances showcase her dynamic range.

Asi Renie, also known as Renie Asi Bampoe-Abu, was born in Fairfax, Virginia and is a versatile singer-songwriter who incorporates a range of genres in her music, including R&B/Soul, Neo-Soul, EDM, and Afro-Pop. Her songs often focus on social issues, empowerment, and love.

Jameella Jè, formerly known as Jamilla, is an R&B and Afropop artist who recently rebranded and returned with a new single titled “Come Thruu.” The song features rapper Kwesi Arthur and producer KaySo and showcases the talents of all three artists.

Naja is an 18-year-old singer from Ghana who is known for her beautiful voice and joyful personality. She specializes in Hi-Life, Hip-Life, Afrobeat, and Afro-Pop music and is signed to Vandys Empire, a record label based in the USA.

Maya Blu, born on January 6th, 2000, is a Gen Z Afrobeat and Afropop artist who started singing at the age of 15. She tried out for the MTN Hitmaker competition twice before making it to the semi-finals under the name Mimi Gold. She later changed her name to Maya Blu and signed with Lynx Entertainment, one of Ghana’s top record labels.

Ginius, also known as Georgina Baker, is a Ghanaian musician based in Britain. She is a producer and singer-songwriter who specializes in Afro-Fusion sound engineering and has been involved in music since the age of 10. In 2019, she gained notoriety after appearing on LinkUpTV’s Producers event in London, and her music has been played on several radio stations, including the BBC, No Signal Radio, London’s Reprezent Radio, and Ghana’s YFM.

It’s impressive to see these musicians’ versatility and ability to experiment with various genres, creating unique sounds that evoke emotions and memories. They have gained recognition through their music, awards, and collaborations with other artists, paving the way for a new generation of musicians from West Africa.
