EU experience in fisheries management is now a necessary practice
This week, the Ukrainian delegation, with the assistance of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, met with representatives of the General Secretariat for Fisheries of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, The Kingdom of Spain was informed of Spain’s experience in harmonizing national fleet management, inspection and control systems with EU legislation.
The delegation, which took part in the events in the Spanish capital of Madrid, included the acting Head of the State Department of Ukraine Igor Klimenko, Head of the Agrarian Resources Regulation Department of the Minagropolita Olga Pazinic and other specialists of the State Fishery Department.
The main objective of the visit was to study the best practices of Spain in applying the key principles of the Joint Fisheries Policy, to improve the management of its fleet, to receive practical recommendations for the establishment and maintenance of a register of fishing vessels and the management of fishing capacity.
At the initiative of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, Fisheries and Food of the Kingdom of Spain, the Ukrainian delegation also met with the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain Luis Planas Puchades, where the acting Head of the State Fishing Industry Igor Klimenko informed about the current situation in the fishing industry. He emphasized the importance of studying Spanish practice for proper implementation of EU requirements in Ukraine. He also noted the problematic aspects of the industry in the process of reform and the consequences of the Russian military aggression on the fisheries of Ukraine.
Luis Planas Puchades noted that this visit is only the first stage of development of Ukrainian-Spanish relations in the field of fisheries, Confirming their readiness for further cooperation and concrete assistance in reforming the industry in accordance with European standards and providing the necessary conditions for the restoration of the fishery sector.
Summing up the program of the visit, Acting Head of the State Fishing Industry of Ukraine Igor Klimenko stressed: The agreements reached today with our Spanish colleagues and the experience we have gained from studying successful EU approaches and practices in fisheries management, will certainly contribute to the implementation of reforms in the Ukrainian fishing industry and the activation of European integration processes in the industry in the near future»
