Ethiopia, Malta Sign Cooperation Agreement

Date:

ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia and Malta have today signed an agreement and two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) that are essential to strengthen mutual cooperation and interests.

This comes as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Demeke Mekonnen and Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Europe and Minister for Trade Ian Borg discuss areas of mutual interest between the two countries.

The signed agreements will promote cooperation in aviation services and MoU in the fields of tourism and diplomatic training.

Demek told a joint media briefing with his colleagues that Ethiopia and Malta have strong historical ties. “We had very fruitful discussions on various issues and concerns of mutual interest to Ethiopia and Malta,” he said.

In addition, both sides should promote private sector investment and business-to-business relations.

He spoke about the importance of the MoU and said that the MoU will serve as another platform for strengthening cooperation and raising cooperation between the two countries to a higher level.

Malta’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, said that Malta and the two countries are committed to improving relations between the two countries and the two peoples.

“The service agreement we signed today is an exciting and important first step in providing air connectivity between Malta and key wintering destinations in Ethiopia, Africa and beyond,” he explained.

He added that we believe that the opening of air links with Malta will contribute to the growth of both our economies.

Borg also reiterated that we also want to strengthen cooperation in youth education and training in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia and Malta have had diplomatic ties since the 1970s, although the two countries established formal relations when Malta opened an embassy in Addis Ababa in 2021.
