An emergency session of the United Nations Security Council was convened on Friday at Poland’s request after Russian drones violated Polish airspace on September 10, 2025. The incident, which involved drones carrying both Russian and Belarusian flags, has escalated tensions in Europe and sparked differing opinions on whether the violation was a deliberate attack.
While several European nations, including Sweden and Germany, expressed strong condemnation and pledged support for Poland, the US response was more reserved, with President Donald Trump suggesting the incident might have been a “mistake.”
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski firmly rejected the “mistake” narrative, stating that the incident was a deliberate act, citing the violation of airspace by 19 drones over several hours.
The drones were tracked more than 300 miles inside Polish borders, marking the first instance of NATO forces engaging Russian drones. In contrast, NATO Supreme Commander Alexus Grynkewich expressed uncertainty about the intentional nature of the incursion, calling for further investigation.
The drone attack occurred amid ongoing military tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and NATO members. It highlights the increasing complexity of international relations in the region, with Poland facing mounting fears of a broader conflict. The US has expressed unwavering support for NATO, with Ambassador Matthew Whitaker reaffirming that NATO would defend every inch of its territory.
