Ukraine starts processing milk into biofuel

Date:

Waste Management Center has teamed up with Danone Ukraine to launch a new project aimed at dairy processing. According to a recent Facebook post, the company has successfully processed 90% of expired dairy products into biogas. The remaining 10% of waste that cannot be processed is safely incinerated to generate heat and electricity. The project is also responsible for the disposal of baby food that has expired.

Recycling Process Explained

For dairy processing the Waste Management Center collects them in special containers and delivers them to a biogas plant, where they undergo anaerobic digestion to become biogas. The packaging is separated into paper, foil, plastic, and tetrapak, and each type is further sorted by type of plastic and paper. Next, the packaging suitable for further processing is cleaned of dairy residues in specially equipped washing machines. The washing process does not involve the use of chemicals, and all the wastewater generated during the cleaning process is delivered to the biogas plant. After the purification process, the materials become secondary raw materials that Ukrainian processing companies can use to manufacture new products.

Positive Impact on the Environment

The Waste Management Center’s initiative has had a significant positive impact on the environment. By dairy processing residues and packaging, the company has reduced the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, which helps prevent pollution and reduces the amount of methane gas released into the atmosphere. Additionally, by converting dairy products into biogas, the company has found a sustainable energy source that reduces the need for non-renewable fuels. Finally, the initiative has created opportunities for Ukrainian processing companies to produce new products from secondary raw materials.

The Waste Management Center and Danone Ukraine have demonstrated their commitment to sustainability and the environment by launching this new project. Through their innovative processing process, they have found a sustainable solution for the disposal of expired dairy products and packaging, which benefits the environment and the community as a whole.
