School Bus Driver Helps Students Learn to Read

Date:

Bus driver Herman Cruse has become a popular reading tutor for the students he drives to Middle Township Elementary School in New Jersey. Despite not being a reading teacher or librarian, Cruse started volunteering his time between routes to help students with their reading. He began two years ago when he overheard a student struggling with a reading assignment and offered to help. Since then, his popular program “Mr. Herman’s Kids” has evolved, and he now meets with kindergartners, first graders, and second graders three days a week to assist them with their reading.

Volunteer Tutoring Program Gains Popularity

Cruse, who has been a bus driver for over 30 years and is a father of five, shares his love of reading with the younger generation while also imparting his own wisdom. He aims to be a supportive and nurturing figure to the children, acting as a big brother, father, or even grandfather to them. Cruse’s dedication to his students has not gone unnoticed, and the school recently surprised him with a special gift to show their gratitude. While he thought he was heading to his bus for dismissal, he found a group of students waiting outside the school cheering to thank him for his work.

Recognition and Gifts for Mr. Herman’s Work

Jenna Bush Hager of the 3rd hour of TODAY presented Cruse with a frame that read “Mr. Herman’s Kids Corner,” giving him an official area in the school to read. Additionally, Scholastic donated 1,000 books to the school in his honor, much to the excitement of the student body. Cruse loves working with the children and helping them develop their reading skills. For him, seeing the joy and excitement on their faces when they finally unlock the ability to read is a reward in itself.
