High-speed internet to connect 500 Rwandan schools

Date:

Rwanda’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology has announced that 500 schools in the country will pilot a satellite internet service provided by SpaceX following its launch on February 22. This initiative is part of a larger project aimed at providing high-speed internet to underserved areas in Rwanda.

Improved Education Access

The satellite-based internet service will provide students and teachers in Rwanda with access to educational resources and digital tools. The aim is to improve education in the country, particularly for those schools lacking reliable internet access. The program is set to begin in February, and the service has the potential to bring reliable and high-speed internet to rural and remote areas. This service will be a valuable tool for improving education, healthcare, and economic opportunities in underserved communities.

One of the schools selected to pilot the program, EP Kimihurura, is already facing the challenge of insufficient digital gadgets for students. The school has 1,405 students, but only 136 gadgets are available. The new program will help alleviate this challenge and provide students with much-needed access to digital resources.

Positive Impact on Underserved Communities

Starlink is a satellite internet service that uses a network of low Earth orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet access to areas with limited or no connectivity. This project has the potential to make a significant impact on underserved communities in Rwanda, particularly in terms of education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Currently, there are over 6,700 primary, secondary, and technical and vocational education and training schools in the country, but only about half of them have internet access. After the launch of the Starlink Internet, the Rwandan government is hoping to reduce this number significantly.

The pilot program in 500 schools is a promising start, and the Rwandan government is hopeful that the project will be a success and eventually expand to other areas in the country.
