South Africa Launches National AI Skills Corps to Train 150,000 Digital Professionals

Date:

South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) officially launched the National AI Skills Corps on December 7, 2025. This flagship program represents a major strategic intervention aimed at addressing the nation’s acute digital workforce shortage by training over 150,000 youth and professionals in crucial areas, including artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and cybersecurity, by 2030. This initiative is critical for sustaining the country’s ambitious digital economy goals.

The Skills Corps is structured to provide high-quality, practical education through micro-credential programs. These programs will be delivered via strategic partnerships with global tech giants like IBM and Google Africa, alongside leading local universities. The curriculum is specifically designed to target sectors facing the most acute talent shortages, such as banking and fintech, mining automation, public health analytics, and smart city development. The initiative is a central pillar of South Africa’s broader ambition to establish itself as the leading AI talent hub on the African continent. By rapidly expanding the skilled workforce, the program will complement the country’s already emerging tech clusters in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The government views the success of the Skills Corps as essential to driving economic competitiveness and ensuring that technological advancements translate into inclusive job growth.
