The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the launch of the “AI for Development” initiative, committing US$1 billion to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and services across African countries. The announcement was made by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, during his speech at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. This major commitment reaffirms the UAE’s strategic goal of leveraging advanced technology to drive sustainable growth and innovative financing solutions for emerging economies.
The program is explicitly designed to translate AI into practical development outcomes. Key focus areas include integrating AI technologies into vital sectors such as education (to improve access and learning quality), healthcare (for AI diagnostics in clinics), agriculture (for precision farming and food security), digital identity, and climate adaptation. The initiative will provide African nations with access to AI computing power, technical expertise, and global partnerships necessary to meet their national development priorities, addressing the continent’s stark digital divide.
The initiative will be implemented by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), which is part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, in cooperation with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency. This structure emphasizes a partnership model over traditional aid. By combining technology, financing, and technical support, the UAE aims to strengthen economic and technological cooperation between the Emirates and African nations, solidifying its position as the continent’s fourth-largest investor.
