Russia Launches “Massive” Missile and Drone Strikes on Ukrainian Cities, Targeting Energy Grid

Date:

Russian forces launched a “massive” combined assault of missile and drone attacks overnight, targeting major Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure across several regions, including Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa Oblast. Ukrainian officials confirmed that the strike package utilized a mixture of Shahed-136/131 kamikaze drones and various cruise missiles, reflecting Russia’s continued strategy of overwhelming air defenses through coordinated, multi-platform attacks. Air defense systems were activated nationwide, with the Ukrainian Air Force claiming success in intercepting a significant number of the incoming projectiles.

The primary targets of the overnight offensive were once again Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure assets. Strikes hit power generation facilities and high-voltage substations, prompting the national energy operator, Ukrenergo, to impose emergency power-cuts and controlled outages across multiple regions. This tactical focus is aimed at reducing Ukraine’s ability to generate and distribute electricity, particularly as the country enters the winter period.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as deliberate “energy terror” intended to inflict humanitarian suffering and disrupt the economy. The attacks underscore the continued intensity of the air war and place immense pressure on Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, which require a sustained supply of advanced interceptor missiles from Western allies.
