TIFF 2025 | Indian, South Asian Diaspora Films Win a Historic 5 Awards

Indian and South Asian Diaspora cinema made a significant impact at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), winning five prestigious awards, marking a historic achievement for the region. This came on the heels of a record 18 films from South Asia and its Diaspora being officially selected for the festival.

Notably, Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound earned the second runner-up position for the International People’s Choice Award. The film, which explores the friendship between two job-seeking individuals from marginalized communities in India, garnered a standing ovation from a nearly packed Roy Thomson Hall. The film stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Jahnvi Kapoor and is set for a global theatrical release on September 26, 2025.

Other highlights include Vimukt, In Search of The Sky by Jitank Singh Gurjar, which won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film. The film tells the story of an aging couple from Madhya Pradesh seeking a miracle at the Maha Kumbh Mela. 

Canadian-Tibetan Kunsang Kyirong’s 100 Sunset received an Honourable Mention for the Best Canadian Discovery Award, while Salar Pashtoonyar’s I Fear Blue Skies won the Vimeo Staff Pick Award for its poignant portrayal of the impact of the Taliban’s return to power on an aid worker in Afghanistan. Additionally, Agapito (Beloved), directed by Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Danelle Romero, won an Honourable Mention in the Short Cuts category.
